Do you love sewing machines?
I know that one does not need to be a seamstress to love sewing machines, because my mother did so.
What if I told you about a sewing machine brand that ruled the industry for over 70 years and even though it has tough competition, its sewing machines still sell like hotcakes?
Necchi’s sewing machines are the best because they’re made for American households. This is a review of top 5 Necchi sewing machines and a buyer’s guide + FAQs to help you pick the best on your own.
Before I take each and every one of these 5 machines and dissect them based on a features, pros and cons model, let us see as to which of them sticks out as a better version for a particular category.
This machine has been disappearing and appearing on Amazon again and again, but till this date, this is one of the bestselling Nechhi sewing machines.
With 63 built-in stitches and other features, it is not better than the bestseller 100 stitches version, but it has the biggest number of built-in stitches and other features, after the bestseller one.
At a little under $200 this is the most affordable Necchi sewing machine that you can find on Amazon. Let’s face it; everyone has a budget and you cannot buy something, even if it is too good, as long as it is unaffordable.
I knew this is what you were waiting for.
So, what is my review criteria?
I won’t say that I’ve personally examined and tested all of these sewing machines, but I’ve tested one or two, then I asked questions from sewing machines experts who have used them and I relied on the review from verified buyers.
So, without further ado, let us read the reviews.
Necchi – 100 Built-in Stitches
This is our bestseller sewing machine from this list, in case you have a short-term memory loss. Why is it a bestseller? May be because it offers the biggest numbers of built-in stitches, wide variety of options and ease of use.
100 Built-in Stitches – This is a professional sewing machine through and through. I know some professional sewing machines from big brands like Brother and Singer that do not have these many stitches. This machine lets you freely choose from a wide range of built-in stitches, Including in those stitches are 6 different designs of buttonholes.
Top Loading Bobbin – This machine comes with a top-loading bobbin. It is a full rotary hook bobbin. Now, I know that this “full rotary hook” thing might be new to your ears. A full rotary hook bobbin is great because it ensures higher speed (of bobbin itself) and very little vibration. By category this is a top-loading bobbin which is known for convenience, uninterrupted stitching and good performance.
Lots of Buttons/Options – On this sewing machine there are a lot of buttons to assist you. All these buttons lead to certain options that you’d like to avail. There is a start/stop button, you can do reverse stitching with Reverse button, there is a button to lock stitch, you can move needle up and down and you can automatically cut the thread. Also, easily find most frequently used stitches and use them with one click.
7mm Maximum Stitch Width – This machine lets you choose stitch width at maximum of 7mm while the maximum length is 5mm. While the length is more or less the average length for such machines, the width is way more than standard one.
16” x 11” Extension Table – This is a sewing machine, but because it is a heavy-duty one you can use it for bigger and harder tasks like quilting. There is a 16” x 11” extension table included in the deal which lets you enjoy more stability and control.
Optic Magnifier – All eyes are not 6/6; you should be able to able to not only thread the needle easily, but see your sewing as you go. The 20x. 40x and 60x optic magnifiers help you see the action clearly.
Sturdy and Durable Built – This is a heavy-duty sewing machine. They used metal and industry-grade plastic to make this machine. It will last with you for years.
Built-in Needle Threader – The built-in needle threader is unfortunately not an automatic needle threader like you notice in case of some high-profile sewing machines, but it is a one-hand needle threader that makes your job super easy nonetheless.
Stitch Card – Yes, there are 100 stitches that you can choose from, but how do you know which designs are available? They send a stitch card with the machine, see the design, choose it from the digital display and you’re good to go.
Hard Cover – One of the most important accessories: a hard cover for when you don’t need it.
Free Arm – The accessory storage tray next to the needle plate can be removed which makes that part a free arm. A free arm lets you freely manipulate the cloth especially while sewing cuffs and collars etc.
7-Piece Feed Dog – There are all types of feed dogs out there. 6 and 7-piece feed dogs are better because bigger the number, better the grip on the fabric.
Manual Thread Tension and Foot Presser Adjustment – You can manually adjust the thread tension and the level of foot presser.
Hand-free Rising and Lowering of Presser Foot – The knee lift system that most of other companies also use is also inducted in this one. With one swift move raise or lower the presser foot.
AC Adapter Included – The adapter that you need to run this machine comes with the package.
Since the pros have already been explained in the features section, let me explain the cons here.
First and foremost of them is a difficult display. First of all it is not a backlit display which makes it hard for you to read digits and other things. Secondly, the size of the digits is also not big enough for many.
We know that you can pick most frequently used stitches, but there is no way to make the machine memorize your favorite stitch settings such as stitch length and width.
Necchi – 63 Built-in Stitches
This is our best overall machine from this list of 5 Necchi sewing machines. I consider it best overall because of the mix of most important features, decent number of built-in stitches and ease of use that it brings to the table.
63 Built-in Stitches – So, the only thing that clearly makes it inferior to the version that I have reviewed above is that this machine does not have 100, but 63 built-in stitches including 4 buttonholes. This still makes it better than many machines from rival Brother and Singer with less than 50 built-in stitches.
1000 Stitches/Minute Maximum Speed – If you really want to know if a machine is made for professional stitching, check its maximum stitching speed out. This one can sew at an incredible speed of 1000 stitches/minute. Average speed in cases of most of the machines is 850/minute.
9” x 5” Sewing Bed Space – The sewing bed space is the area that you use for sewing … right underneath the needle and area surrounding that part. A 9” x 5” sewing space means that you have enough space to do big projects.
Independent Bobbin Winding Motor – Ever had to stop while sewing only to wind bobbin and wonder if there was a way to let the machine take care of that? This is what independent bobbin winding motor of this machine achieves for you. It will start winding the bobbin as soon you set it in place and press the button.
Manual Thread Tension and Foot Adjustment – Just like the previous version, this one also lets you manually adjust thread tension and decide how high or low the presser foot should be.
Built-in Needle Threader – Just like the needle threader of the bestseller machine, this one also lets you manually thread the needle with ease and convenience.
Reverse Stitching – The dedicated button for reverse stitching will change the mode from simple to reverse stitching that people use to strengthen the stitch.
Top Loading Full-Rotary Bobbin – The same as above – in case you skipped everything to this product’s review, do know that a top-loading bobbin does not jam easily, makes sewing easy and swift for you. A full-rotary bobbin moves fast with little to no vibration.
Adjustable Stitch Length and Width – This one also lets you adjust the length and width of the stitch. Maximum width is still 7mm while maximum length is 5mm.
Quick Command Keys – There are many quick command keys and buttons that make your life easy while using this machine. You can auto-lock this machine or needle up or down with those keys. Likewise, speed control, thread cutting and many other features can be used with a push.
LCD Display – The LCD display on this machine lets you adjust, edit, select and save favorite stitches that you like.
Vertical Thread Feeding – This one has a vertical thread feeding system. Due to vertical system and two spools, thread feeding is flawless and easy.
Again, the benefits or pros have already been defined above, let us talk a little about the cons and why they are important.
This sewing machine is by all means a near heavy-duty one if not the real heavy-duty machine. It has many built-in stitches and above average stitching speed. It is ideal for big projects, but not adding a free arm feature, they kind of hampered the performance of this machine.
How important do you think is a machine’s hard cover? It does not only protects it from dust, it makes it easy to move it anywhere and it protects it from accidents.
Necchi – 16 Built-in Stitches
This one was the last one among our best picks. This one was picked only because there are so many people who are willing to give up on extra features and options to get their hands on an affordable sewing machine. This is that machine.
16 Built-in Stitches – I know that this is a little disappointing, because 16 built-in stitches are not enough. But when you look at the value that you’re getting for your money, you don’t worry much. There are 15 essential stitches that you can choose from and 1 four-step buttonhole.
Top Leading & Full-Rotary Hook Bobbin – We have talked about this before, but in case you skipped everything to this detail, let me tell you that this kind of bobbin is something that Necchi uses in almost all of its sewing machines.
Top loading is a commonality – that bobbin makes sewing swift and easy. While full-rotary category of it (something specific with Necchi sewing machines), keeps sewing fast and without any vibration.
Highly Portable – This sewing machine weighs at only 11lbs. It is cheap, but it is super portable too. Also, it does not take as much space as heavy-duty sewing machines take.
LED-Lit Sewing Area – This sewing machine, as affordable as it is, does not miss out on some very important features. For example, take this LED light that keeps your sewing area illuminated when you sew.
Drop Feed – Drop feed is one of the most common and successful types of feeding mechanisms that were introduced to sewing machines. You drop the needle into the fabric which is properly controlled with help of feed dog and this way you easily control the fabric.
Thread Tension Control – This machine has three dials to make sewing easy for you. One of those dials is thread tension control dial. Just rotate the dial to have the required amount of thread tension.
Built-in Needle Threader – The built-in needle threader of this machine is of the same quality that you enjoy in case of any Necchi machine. With one touch needle threader you manually but easily thread the needle.
Free Arm – This machine also has a free arm functionality. You can remove the accessory storage box in the sewing area to turn it into a free arm and thus easily sew hems and cuffs and collars.
Carrying Handle – Unfortunately, due to it being an affordable sewing machine, it does not have a hard case. But a carrying handle makes it easy for you to lift it and move it to anywhere.
Easy Stitch Selection – Speaking of dials again, using one of the dials, you can easily select the stitch that you want to go with. This machine does not have an LCD display, but these dials compensate for the lack of a display.
Reverse Stitching – By using the reverse lever you can switch from straight stitching to reverse stitching – which you know why and when you need.
Auto De-Clutch Bobbin Winder – This is a smart solution that all good Necchi sewing machines offer. You do not want your needle going up and down while you’re winding the bobbin. An auto de-clutch bobbin winder will automatically prevent the needle from moving while you’re threading the bobbin.
You already know why those pros are important, let us talk a little about the cons.
First of all, only 15 built-in stitches (and one buttonhole design) are not enough at all. Let us tall address the elephant in the room and admit that average number of built-in stitches in a sewing machine is from 70 to 100. This means that this machine is far behind the target (average number of stitches).
The second problem is self-explanatory. An extendable table makes it easy for you to have better control on the machine, there is very little movement or vibration and better control o the fabric.
Necchi – 60 Built-in Stitches
This sewing machine from Necchi is more or less the same as 63 stitches one, but it has 3 extra stitches and some other features that make it different from that one. It is not a budget sewing machine, but its exclusive features justify its price.
60 Built-in Stitches – So, this one offers 60 built-in stitches which makes it far better than its predecessor on this list, but this also costs roughly double the price. However, 60 stitches including 4 one-stop buttonholes takes it closer to the ideal range of built-in stitches.
Top Loading Full-Rotary Hook Bobbin – A top loading bobbin, as and when compared to a front loading one, is considered better because it does not jam as much as front loading one does. A full-rotary hook bobbin is considered a specialty of Necchi sewing machines; it moves fast without any vibration.
Lots of Convenience Buttons – Just like other models, this one also has lots of buttons that makes it easy for you to make lots of important choices such as start and stop, easy reverse stitching, needle up and down, locking stitch, speed control and thread cutting etc.
LCD Display – Unlike the one that I’ve reviewed before this one, this machine has a proper LCD display like the rest of Necchi machines on this list. Digits are readable and buttons are there to help you.
Adjustable Length and Width – This machine, by every standard, is just as good as any other Necchi sewing machine. Take adjustability of the stitch length and width for an example. You can adjust the width to a maximum of 7mm and length to a maximum of 5mm.
16” x 11” Extension Table – In terms of the size of extension table, this sewing machine is just as good as 100 built-in stitches (bestseller) machine from Necchi. It also offers the same 16” x 11” extension table that the other machines do.
20x Magnifier – Yes, it is better to get more than one magnifier, but you can appreciate a 20x vision that you can enjoy with the only magnifier that you get.
Select Favorite Stitches – Right underneath the display are some stitch buttons that let you save and select your favorite stitches. This helps you with quick selection of stitches and settings thereof.
Knee Lifter – There is a proper knee lifter for hands-free lifting and dropping of the presser foot.
Hard Cover – This one does come with a hard case. This means it is easy to move to anywhere and it will remain dust-free and safe.
Built-in Needle Threader – Necchi’s manual needle threader is not the same as automatic ones that you notice in case of other machines. However, it is a very simple 3-step thing that takes hardly 30 seconds to thread a needle.
Free Arm – This machine also features a free arm. Just remove the accessory box and this will turn that area into a free arm. Now you’re good to sew hems, cuffs and collars.
First of all, it is a very expensive machine. Perhaps the most expensive machine from Necchi and even though it is full of amazing features, a price tag of roughly $900 is not justified.
Secondly, it has a complex stitching process. It takes a long learning curve and during that you can easily mess up with your projects and this machine.
Necchi – 30 Built-in Stitches
This is the last sewing machine on our list. In terms of features, it is better than the 16-stitches one, but it is not much inferior to those with bigger number of stitches.
30 Built-in Stitches – So, this one has in total 30 built-in stitches including 3 different buttonhole designs. This is a modest number of stitches that you can go for especially in case you’re a beginner or someone with limited use for sewing.
Top Loading Full-Rotary Bobbin – This also has a jam-proof top loading bobbing that does not create much vibration.
Convenience Buttons – Just like in case of other machines, this one also as convenience buttons for reverse stitching, start/stop, speed adjustments, locking stitch button and needle up/down buttons.
Adjustable Length and Width – This machine has the same maximum length and maximum width as in case of other machines – 7mm and 5mm respectively.
16” x 11” Extension Table – This one also has a 16” x 11” extension table to help you with durable sewing of bigger projects like quilting etc.
This detail does not need much explanation, but 30 stitches are far from adequate number of built-in stitches for a professional sewing machine. Display is there, but it is not backlit and digits are small – thus hard to read.
What are the points that should be considered while buying a Necchi sewing machine?
Number of Stitches – Except for the first one, none of these sewing machines have adequate or near adequate number of stitches. 60 or 63 is still fine, but 30 and 16 are not at all adequate.
Maximum Speed – Most of these machines have 1000 s/m speed. You should get a machine with good speed (850 to 1000) in case you need one for professional purposes.
Adjustability – Are the length and width adjustable? In case they are adjustable to what extent you can adjust them.
Free Arm – Can the machine be converted into a free arm one? Because you need this feature to easily sew hems and collars etc.
Extension Table – Does the machine offer an extension table? If yes then what is the width and length of that table?
Here are the most frequently asked questions about these sewing machines and the answers to those questions.
Are these the only Necchi sewing machine models?
No there are a lot of models made by this company over a time span of 70+ years, but these are the most famous models.
Are there any vintage Necchi sewing machines?
Yes there are because this is an old company, but you cannot easily find those. Also those machines are not as convenient as latest models.
Which one is the best Necchi sewing machine?
In terms of features, almost all of them are the same, but 100 built-in stitches make the first one the best model so far.
Are Necchi sewing machines easy to maintain?
This depends on the type of machines you’ve been using before. I found them affordable when compared with some machines from Brother and Singer.
How to thread a Necchi sewing machine?
You get a built-in needle threader that you can use to easily thread the machine. Just have the clip go through the needle until the small needle of that clip goes through the big needle hole of the needle that you want to use. Then have the thread go through the clip and job is done.
The Necchi sewing machine history shows that these machines have the potential to serve American households for a long time.
Necchi Royal series sewing machine reviews show that while all of these machines come with more or less the same impressive features, where they lack is in terms of the number of stitches.
All machines including Necchi HD22, Necchi SuperNova, Necchi FA16 and others have more or less maximum 100 built-in stitches, which are not enough when you compare with machines that have as many as 600 built-in stitches.
Necchi HD22 sewing machine review reveals the potential of these machines, if only the number of built-in stitches is increased.
