If you’re new to sewing, you might not even know the name of Viking or Husqvarna sewing machines. However, professional seamstresses do know this old Swedish company that makes amazing sewing machines since 1872.
This company, previously Husqvarna, now Viking, makes some of the best heavy-duty, comparatively affordable (when you compare with big American brands like Singer and Brother, and easy to use sewing machines.
Best Husqvarna Sewing Machines
Do you love a lot of features that bring convenience to your sewing table? If yes, then you’d love these sewing machines too.
In this article there are reviews of top 5 Husqvarna Viking sewing machines and a buyer’s guide with the answers to the most important FAQs.
So, before we take each and every one of these sewing machines and review each of them separately, her are our best picks based on a few most sought-after categories.
Bestseller/Best of the Best
Husqvarna Viking E20
If you are looking for a heavy-duty and thoroughly professional Viking sewing machine with many different options, helpful features and a decent number of built-in stitches, this one is the machine that you should go for.
Husqvarna Viking Jade 20
In case you are not looking for the best combination of economy and amazing features, but you’re more bent on the number of stitches, this is the sewing machine that you should go for. It has 82 beautiful stitches that help you diversify your stitching.
Best Reasonably Priced
Husqvarna Viking H Class 100 Q
At around $340, this is the most affordable Husqvarna Viking sewing machine that I know. However, keep it in mind that best reasonably priced is not equal to cheapest. I picked this category winner based on the bang it offers for the bucks.
Top Husqvarna Viking Sewing Machines’ Reviews
For this list, I picked 5 best Husqvarna Viking sewing machines from all the Viking sewing machines that you can find on Amazon.
My review criteria are very simple.
I review a product based on the category where it shines, pros and cons and then the features.
To review a product, I rely on personal testing ( I tested E20), interviewing the experts and definitely on the reviews given by the verified customers.
Now, without any further ado – read each and every review.
Husqvarna Viking H Class 100 Q
So, this one shines not only because of its affordability, but also because of various amazing features that it brings to your sewing table. However, the best pros of this one is its affordability. If you take a look at its features and then compare it with a few Viking machines that actually cost more than $1000 (they’re on this list), you have to admit that for around $340, this machine is one of the best.
Affordable – Enough has been said about this. You can see the long list of features – some of the machines on this do not have one or two features that this one does and they still cost from $500 to $1000+.
Computerized Sewing Machine – So, this is a computerized sewing machine. What makes it a computerized one? Frankly, it is only because of a few features you can call it a computerized one. For example, you can use the automatically saved ideal stitch settings anytime you set on the machine; also, you can adjust those settings as per your unique needs or some special techniques.
Display – If you ask me where all good Viking machines fail, it is the display (or lack thereof). Amazingly, most of these machines do not have any display at all. Of the 5 that I picked, only one has a big display that is a touchscreen. This one does not have a touchscreen, but it has a digital display that shows the number of stitch that you picked.
Portable – This sewing machine is highly portable. With only 15 lbs weight and 15+” x 11+” size, this machine can easily be stored anywhere and can be moved easily too.
20 Quilting and Sewing Stitches – This machine has 20 built-in quilting, sewing and decorative stitches in total. I know that 20 is not the ideal number of built-in stitches, but it is perfectly fine for an affordable machine. Included in 20 stitches two one-step buttonhole designs.
Stitch Width Adjustment – This is a budget machine, so there are not a lot of features, but still you can adjust the length of the stitch from 0 mm to 7mm. The length and the width are automatically set but latter can always be adjusted.
Speed Control – The speed control slide on this sewing machine allows you to go from superfast to slow in order to control the speed.
Start/Stop Button – In case you want to sew without the presser foot (to have a better control on sewing especially when you have a delicate task), you can press the button and sew without foot control.
Needle Position Selection – You know that while sewing, you have to very often switch between different needle positions – you do this for tasks like applique, accurate sewing and pivoting etc. With one touch you can set the needle position up or down on this machine.
Top Loading Bobbin – This machine uses a top loading bobbin. The biggest benefit of a top-loading bobbin is that it is jam-proof. Which means you’d save a lot of time and energy.
Extra Presser Foot Lift – This machine is made for all kinds of fabrics. Let us suppose that you’re sewing more than one layer of a thick fabric, you’d have to make the space to have that fabric right underneath the presser foot. The life raises the foot to highest possible solution so you can
Built-in Needle Threader – An easy to use built-in needle threader is there to make things super easy for you.
Feed Teeth Adjustment – This machine lets you indulge in two types of sewing simple or free-motion. Use the simple sewing with simple position of feed teeth, but you can use feed teeth lever to lower the teeth, loosen the control on fabric and let it slip for free-motion sewing.
Fix Function – Use the highly useful fix function to immediately stop sewing and tie off/secure seams with a neat and clean finish.
Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure – You can adjust the pressure of the presser foot to easily deal with any type/thickness of fabric.
Accessories – You get a big accessories kit with this machine – even though machine is a budget one. Accessories include 6 presser feet, pack of needles, bobbins, screwdriver and seam ripper etc.
Hard Case – Another accessory is the hard case that protects the item from accidents and dust.
As you can see the pros have already been explained in the features section, let us take a look at the cons.
The first problem is that this machine has a very small display, that too is not a touch one, not a backlit one and not one with many options or choices to make.
The second problem is pretty obvious – built-in stitches is hardly the number where you start from. This number makes this machine nothing, but a beginner’s machine, which is fine, because it is a budget machine.
Husqvarna Viking Jade 20
One of the most stylish sewing machines out there is this one. This Husqvarna Viking sewing machine is not only known for its style, but it is also one of the most convenient sewing machines. It is mainly and mostly because of the stitching options it offers to its users.
Large Sewing Space – This machine is a very simple one. It has a sleek and stylish, but simple profile with zero noise. For example, this machine lets you enjoy one of the biggest sewing spaces that a sewing machine can offer: 200mm or almost 8” sewing area.
82 Beautiful Built-in Stitches – This machine, unlike the one that I’ve reviewed above, does not lack in terms of the number of stitches. It has over 80 decorative stitches that you can choose from. These stitches’ width can be adjusted from 0 mm to 7mm.
Built-in Sewing Guide – Just open the lid of the machine and you will find a built-in sewing guide. Take a look at the fabric type and the sewing technique, match them with the fabric at hand, and the guide will show you perfect stitch and settings to achieve that type of result.
Designer Accessory Compartment – Another cool thing is this machine’s sleek, stylish and modern accessory compartment. Unlike other machines, you cannot easily see the box because the design is focused on aesthetics. The box remains hidden unless you open it and hides all accessories including the foot pedal.
Start/Stop Button – There are a lot of seamstresses who do not like foot controls because the speed simply goes out of the control – especially while working on a delicate project. This situation is addressed with a start/stop button; just press the button and sew without foot control.
7 Husqvarna Viking Presser Feet – This machine comes with 7 Husqvarna Viking original snap-on presser feet. One of those presser feet is the one-step buttonhole foot. They’re snap-on feet, which means you can install one in a snap and it’s ready to work.
Speed Control – There is a speed control button on this machine. Other than start/stop button, another solution for fast sewing speed is to adjust it to the speed you want. The two buttons (for fast or slow speed) are right on top of start/stop. Press + to increase the speed and – to decrease it.
Presser Feet Selection Buttons – The selection button right next to the small display, let you pick the right presser foot for the kind of stitch that you selected and that is visible on the LCD display.
Needle Up/Down – This is the same feature that you must have noticed in the previously review. You can up or down the needle with a swift move.
One-Step Buttonholes – Among the 82 stitches are the buttonhole designs that you can easily implement with one-step buttonhole foot.
Drop Feed Teeth Adjustment – As it has been explained above, you can lower the drop feed’s teeth in order to let the fabric slip and thus enter the free-motion sewing/quilting.
29 Needle Positions – There are overall 29 different needle positions that you can switch between. Since there are so many fabrics and so many different types of projects involved e.g. sewing, upholstery and quilting etc., you can make use of different positions.
LED Display – The display is an LED display – although it is neither big, nor colored or touch.
LED-lit – Your sewing area would always be illuminated with an LED light right on top of the sewing space.
Needle Threader – Just like all standard/high-quality sewing machines, this one also has a built-in needle threader.
The pros of this product have already been explained, let us talk about the cons.
The first problem is a little difficult to understand. You know that when you stop sewing, the threads at the beginning and end of a seam must be tied off. On this machine, you can do this via Stop button, reverse or Fix. But they only work for the end of the stitch – while tying off the beginning the bobbin gets jammed.
The other problem is the same as it was in case of the previously reviewed machine; the display is there, but its small and one with very limited features.
Husqvarna Viking E20
I know this is the machine that you were waiting for. This is the best of all these 5 machines and it’s not something that only I say, the verified customers’ ratings and reviews also say the same. Your vintage Viking sewing machines might be family heirloom, but they don’t beat this one when it comes to ease, convenience and helpful features.
32 Built-in Stitches – So, in terms of the number of stitches, this machine is a little disappointing (especially when you compare it with Jade’s 82 built-in stitches), but it is still more than the 20 stitches that our affordable machine offered you.
Heavy-Duty Machine – This is not like a portable machine that you must have noticed in the first review. This is a heavy-duty and comparatively big Viking sewing machine that is made to last many years.
One-Step Buttonhole – Among the feet that you will get with this machine, will be this one that is a snap-on foot. Just install it and you’re good to make buttonholes immediately.
Stitch Length and Width Adjustment – Where this machine beats others, is not only in terms of overall quality and customer happiness, but also because it does not limit your freedom to pick your stitch’s length adjustment. You do not HAVE to pick a pre-set size. With this one, you can adjust the length too (and not just width). The length can be adjusted anywhere between 0 and 4mm, while the width can be adjusted between 0 mm and 5mm.
Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure – The presser foot’s pressure is not all the same. It has to be proportionate to the kind of fabric that you’re using. This machine lets you adjust the pressure as per the nature of fabric.
Built-in Needle Threader – Just like in case of all standard machines, this one also comes equipped with a built-in needle threader. You do not have to thread it manually; it is a very easy and convenient experience now.
Accessories – With this machine you get a lot of accessories (one of the reasons why it is the best). You get all purpose foot, zipper foot, satin stitch foot, buttonhole foot, quilting foot, free-motion/darning foot and blind hem foot. Also, you get a pack of needles, a seam ripper, screwdriver, bobbins, spool pin felt, seam guide and oil bottle etc.
Soft Cover – The last thing is a soft cover that you get to protect it from dust.
You know very well the pros, it’s the cons that need a little explanation.
How about we start this with the first one. The problem is that unlike vintage Husqvarna machines, this one is not very sturdy. Take the material used in making the foot plate; the lever is made of cheap plastic.
The biggest problem with this machine is that it does not have a display at all. I know that you can make all choices via knobs and buttons, but a modern sewing machine must have a digital display.
This is yet another Emerald series sewing machine from Viking. However, this one is more or less a limited version of the above reviewed one. In terms of total number of stitches as well as other features, it is not as advanced as the other one – although it has its own category.
16 Built-in Stitches – There are total 16 built-in stitches that you can use while using this machine. This is less than 82 that the other machine comes with, and less than other machines too, but with 60 different functions, this machine somehow compensates for the lacking.
Adjustable Stitch Length and Width – The good thing is that even though this machine is lacking in terms of number of stitches, it allows you to adjust not only the width, but the length too. Using this machine, you can adjust the width from 0mm to 5mm, while length can be adjusted from 0mm to 4mm.
One-Step Buttonhole – Among the free presser feet that you get, one is a one-step buttonhole. Just pick the buttonhole style that you want and use the simple one-step buttonhole to make the hole.
Snap-on Presser Feet – The presser feet that come with this sewing machine, not just the buttonhole one, but all of them, are snap-on feet. Which means, you just snap them on the machine and they’re ready to work.
Built-in Needle Threader – Just like all good machines, this one has this basic ease of use functionality.
Drop Feed Bobbin – This one uses a drop feed bobbin that is known for smooth operation and the ease of use.
Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure – Depending on the kind of fabric or the layers that you’re gonna sew on your machine, this one allows you to adjust the presser foot’s pressure as per the nature of the fabric/number of layers.
Rotary Hook System – Now, this is one feature that does not only lets this machine enter the ranks of the most successful Viking machines, but you find out that this feature makes it better than them. A rotary hook system is used to reduce the vibration and increase smooth and quiet operation of a machine.
Accessories – This machine also comes with a handful of accessories. You get a utility foot A, utility foot B, buttonhole foot, zipper foot, adjustable blind hem foot, non-stock glide foot and edging foot etc. Other than these you get a pack of needles, bobbins, screwdriver and seam ripper etc.
Hard Cover – Again – this machine beats the other Emerald in terms of protection. This one has a hard cover, while the other one didn’t have any.
I’m not gonna waste any time explaining the pros for they’ve already been explained. Here’s a little explanation of the cons.
The first problem is that this machine does not have a display – at all. I know that you can still use the machine with all the buttons and knobs, but a proper display is an essential to a modern sewing machine.
The other problem is even more obvious. It does not matter if there are 60+ functions for the 16 built-in stitches that this machine has to offer. 16 stitches are not sufficient by any standard.
Husqvarna Viking Opal 690Q
208 Built-in Stitches – So, this machine might be the winner of the best overall machines from this list, because in terms of features – especially number of built-in stitches – this machine beats every other Viking machine, but the price for this value is simply too much. Included in its 208 stitches are utility stitches, quilting stitches, decorative stitches and 4 programmable alphabet stitches.
Sensor System Technology – This machine is the sewing machine of today – if not tomorrow. Take this Sensor System for example. This system liberates you of any worries to adjust presser foot height or other things when you go from a thick to thin fabric or vice versa.
Monochrome Touch Screen with a Stylus – Where this machine really shines is in the LCD display chapter. Not only this machine has a big display, but it is a touch screen with a stylus. However, it is not a colored one – instead a monochrome one.
Electronic Thread Tension Adjustment – This machine has so many amazing things tech-wise that you cannot simply ignore it. Take this automatic and electronic thread tension adjustment system for example. System judges your techniques and the fabric you’re using and then automatically adjusts the tension.
Start/Stop for Slow Sewing – Like all other amazing sewing machines from this company, this one also has this functionality. Press the button and enjoy better control on sewing.
Automatic Thread Cutter – You love saving time? You’d love how automatic thread cutter on this machine will cut the top and bobbin thread every time you need it.
Bobbin Thread Sensor – Another sensor! This one saves a lot of time and hassle. This makes the machine stop automatically every time when bobbin thread is about to run out.
200mm Sewing Surface – You get roughly 8” or 200 mm big sewing surface to use.
Sewing Advisor for Automatic Settings – If you love automatic settings, less hassle and more time saved from useless details, you’d appreciate how this machine’s sewing advisor optimizes your sewing with automatic settings.
3 LED Lights – There are in total 3 LED lights to super illuminate your work area.
Stitch Width Adjustment – You can adjust the width of the thread anywhere from 0 mm to 7mm.
Accessories – The accessories included in this package are utility foot, decorative foot, buttonhole foot, zipper foot, blind hem foot, edging foot, set of needles, bobbins and other things.
So, the pros of this sewing machine have been explained very well in the features section; let us talk about the cons.
The first con and the reason why I don’t consider this machine the top winner of this list is its price. This sewing machine is priced well over $950. Even considering all the tech revolution that it brings to a seamstress’s life, this price is hard to justify.
The other problem is that some customers experience intermittent static shocks off the metal plate.
In case you were thinking what to look for when buying any of the Husqvarna sewing machine models and you don’t want to buy a machine based on the Husqvarna sewing machine reviews only, this guide will help you a lot.
Number of Stitches
One of the serious criticisms on these sewing machines is on their absolute lack of good number of built-in stitches. One of them features only 16 – only one of them has 100+. So, in case you’re bent on the number of stitches, you should know which one to pick.
Does all the glittering sewing machine tech that you get to notice in case of modern machines impresses you and dictates your buying decisions or you stick to the old-school sewing prowess? This matters, because then you will see whether to go with a budget machine with old-school everything or an expensive machine with new tech things.
Almost all of these machines let you adjust the stitch width from 0 mm to to 5/7mm, but only one or two allow the length adjustment. So, in case you prefer to be able to do the length adjustment too, you should take this into consideration while picking your Viking sewing machine.
Here are the most frequently asked questions and their answers.
Are Husqvarna Viking sewing machine prices reasonable?
The Viking sewing machine prices are high, but they are proportionate to the quality of these machines. Still there are a few budget machines that you can pick from.
How to thread a Husqvarna Viking sewing machine?
The machine is threaded more or less the same way you thread other machines. If it has to be threaded from top, let it go from under the spool, then follow the arrows on plastic body and then you have it through all the points until it goes through the needle.
How good is Husqvarna Viking Jade 20 sewing machine?
Jade 20’s review is included, you can read that for a detailed opinion. My personal opinion is that this is one of the best Viking machines. It is neat, clean and design-wise awesome too. Also, when you look at specs, it is one of the best because of wide array of features that it offers.
Which of Husqvarna Viking sewing machines is the best?
In case you can afford the price and you love tech, I’d say none of them is better than Opal 690Q. However, in case you are not bent on tech and your budget is limited, go for the E20.
