It’s interesting to know why I bought a Pfaff sewing machine.
Quilting on my old machine, won’t mention the name, I stopped like a hundred times because it broke many needles, I had to unjam the bobbin and at times I had to take a break because motor overheated.
That was the time I learned that a professional quilter and tailor must have a professional, sturdy and durable sewing machine.
Top Pfaff Sewing Machines’ Reviews and Buyer’s Guide
When it comes to making machines, not many nations can compete with Germans. This is a review, and buyer’s guide of best Pfaff sewing machines.
Before I get down to the nitty gritty of each of these 5 top Pfaff sewing machine reviews, let us take a look at the salient features of a few of them that will suit you better.
Pfaff Quilt Ambition 2.0
In case you’re looking for a machine that is the best combination of sewing and quilting, and in case you’re looking for a machine that is the best combination of advanced features and ease of use, this one is the machine you should buy.
Best for Ease of Use
Pfaff Quilt Ambition 630
If you’re one of those old-school sewing machine junkies that love new-school’s wide array of options, but still want to have the ease of use, simple control and convenience that came with old school machines, this one is made for you.
Best for Affordability
Pfaff Smarter 260c
Let us admit and not fool ourselves, doesn’t matter whether or not you know the best sewing machine in the world, you cannot buy it unless you afford it. And when we talk about affordability, let us also admit that Pfaff is a very durable and high-quality German sewing machine and even though it is the most affordable one (for the value it offers), it still costs more than $300.
In this section, I’m going to take each of these sewing machines and dissect them based on their features, pros and cons. My criteria for the reviews is an all-inclusive one based on my personal testing of the first machine, interviews with experts of sewing machines and the reviews given by verified customers.
Pfaff Quilt Ambition 2.0
This is the one that I purchased and used for big projects like quilting, It is more or less, similar to Pfaff Passport 2.0 and Pfaff Passport 3.0 (in terms of features and quality). The best thing that you like about this machine the best combination of features and options.
201 Decorative Stitches – When we say that Pfaff sewing machines are a class apart, we mean it. There are not many sewing machines from Singer or Brother that offer you this big number of built-in decorative stitches.
7 One-step Buttonholes – What is a one-step buttonhole? Before today’s automatic and modern machines, making buttonholes took time and more than one step. Now with one swift move you make a buttonhole: with this one you can make 7 such buttonhole designs.
4 Alphanumeric Fonts – Those who love quilting and embroidery (as far as sewing words on quilts is concerned) would love this sewing machine because of 4 alphanumeric fonts that this machine offers.
Adjustable Stitch Length and Width – The stitch length and width can be adjusted from minimum to a maximum level. The stitch adjustment buttons on the main panel help with this.
Drop-in Bobbin – This sewing machine has a top drop-in bobbin. This type of bobbin is considered the best because it is easy to install and it is jam-proof.
Manual Tension Adjustment – While there are certain limitations on the kind of thread that you can use with this machine (bobbin thread should be 100-120), you can easily adjust thread tension manually.
29 Needle Positions – This is a bit strange, because most of the sewing machines offer you a limited number of sewing needle positions from 3 to roughly 7, but this one provides you a total number of 29. This gives you absolute freedom to position your needle wherever you want to make a stitch.
Ability to Memorize Favorite Stitches – This sewing machine allows you to save a combination of your favorite stitches and settings so you may utilize them with one push of a button.
External Drop Feed – This sewing machine has an external drop feed, which considered better because of ease of use and uninterrupted operation.
Adjustable Presser Foot Pressure – You can adjust the pressure of the presser feet while using this machine.
As you can see, the pros have already been explained in the features section, let us try and understand the cons.
The first problem is that this machine is not ideal for very thick fabrics like thick leather, suede and canvas etc.
The second problem is that because it is a high-speed and heavy-duty machine, it is noisier than many other machines.
Pfaff Quilt Ambition 630
This another Pfaff sewing machine from their Ambition series. The quality that makes it one of the best sewing machines on this list is its ease of use. With a big display and a lot of options to customize the way you sew, this machine is the second best on my list.
201 Built-in Stitches – As you can see, being another sewing machine from the ambition series, this one is also enabled with 201 built-in decorative stitches.
Color Display – This one has a colored LED display. The screen is a touch screen with a lot of icons to help you select stitches and make other options. The only downside is that symbols, digits and words appear a little bit smaller and thus they’re a bit hard to read.
IDT – The Integrated Dual Transportation is a system that helps these sewing machines to feed the fabric with zero chances of slippage. As a result, you enjoy improved control on the fabric.
Manual Needle Height Adjustment – You can up and down the needle manually while threading it or sewing.
Mirror Image of Stitches – The best thing about the big colored display is that you do not get to see an ambiguous code or image of the stitch, but you see a mirror image of the stitch that you select.
Needle Protection – The twin needle program means that you would be using two needles to sew parallel lines of stitches while the bobbin thread will be making a zigzag pattern between both of the lines. This way it is very unlikely for one to break a needle.
Two Alphanumeric Fonts – Where this machine lacks and the one reviewed above wins is in terms of the number of alphanumeric fonts. That one has 4 fonts, while this one has only two.
29 Needle Positions – Just the previous one, this one also has 29 needle positions. This is more than abundant.
7 One-Step Buttonholes – This one also has 7 buttonhole styles that can be created in a one-step move.
Free-Motion Stitching – On top of everything that this machine can do, better than others, is that it allows you to apply free-motion stitching. Freely move your stitching anywhere on the fabric.
As you can see, the pros don’t need any further explanation.
Cons are very simple. This machine is almost perfect, but only two alphanumeric fonts are insufficient.
The other problem is its price. It is about the most expensive machine on this list.
Pfaff Smarter 260c
It would be enough to say about this machine that while it does not have as many feature as other Pfaff machines on this list, it is the most affordable one with a reasonable combination of impressive features.
27 Decorative Stitches – As you can see, this one is an economy machine with a limited number of features. As compared to 201 stitches that other machines offered, this one has only 27 of them.
Built-in Needle Threader – This machine has however all basic and some advanced features – something that you can expect from Pfaff. For example, it has a built-in needle threader.
LED Light – The stitching area is illuminated with help of an LED light – the least you can expect from a modern machine like this one.
Reverse Stitch – With one swift move, you can shift from simple stitching to reverse stitching – you know, to strengthen the stitches.
Drop Feed – This one also has drop feed functionality. What is it? You fix the dog in a down position which allows you to freely move fabric right underneath the needle.
Free Arm – To give you more control on fabric and sewing, they made this a free arm sewing machine.
Adjustable Speed – With a variable speed slider you can choose from the minimum to maximum stitching speed allowed by this machine.
Adjustable Length and Width – Apart from the flawless default stitch length and width details, you can use the adjustment controls on the main panel to adjust the length and width to your favorite settings.
Twin Needle Program – As I have explained this, you use twin needles and the bobbin zigzags between two parallel lines of stitches made by those needles. This way, you reduce the chances of breaking a needle accidentally.
The pros have already been explained in the features section; let us take a look at cons.
First of all, even the best of Pfaff sewing machines are not considered ideal when it comes to fabrics like leather, suede and canvas etc.
Secondly, even for its price range, only 27 decorative stitches are little to nothing.
Pfaff Creative 1.5
What if you loved sewing machines that came with a lot of buttons and option, and in a vibrant red color? I know the seamstresses would love it. This is Pfaff Creative 1.5.
IDT System – As it has been explained again, one of the most prominent features of Pfaff sewing machines is the IDT system. It lets you have better control on the fabric under the needle.
Large Embroidery Area – With a 200 x 150mm embroidery area (Master Hoop and all that) you enjoy freedom of space to go creative with the designs that you have in your mind.
Fast Speed – This sewing machine offers one of the fastest embroidery speeds when compared with other sewing machines within this price range. This means that within a short period of time, you’d do more embroidery.
Import Embroidery Designs from PC and MAC – What brings this machine equal to some of the best embroidery machines from rivals like Singer and Brother etc., is its ability to import designs from a PC or a MAC. Their proprietary embroidery software helps with that.
150 Built-in Stitches – in terms of built-in decorative stitches too, this machine is on par with other machines on this list and in the same niche. It has 150 total stitches, including 101 built-in embroidery styles, 2 embroidery and 2 alphanumeric fonts.
Free Arm – Want more control? This machine is a free arm machine so you can easily control the fabric for more manipulate and easier design.
Free Motion Sewing – Likewise, it is a free motion sewing machine – sew anywhere on the fabric using this feature.
So, the problems with this one are kinda self-explanatory. You cannot have a significant increase in stitch width and the machine is very noisy.
Pfaff Creative 3.0
With a big colored display, more options when compared with 1.5 and an elegant style profile, this machine is perfect for those who love embroidering.
Electronic Foot Speed Control – So, this machine lets you control the stitching speed with foot pressure. The speed will be proportionate to the pressure.
Top Loading Bobbin – This one comes with a top-loading bobbin. You know that they are the best because of jam-resistance.
On-Screen Customizing of Designs – This is a very advanced machine and by all means better than 1.5. With a stylus you can customize the design that you pick on the display. Also, you can combine different designs.
Big Color Display – The display is a big, colored and touch display with physical buttons as well. See the stitches in actual shape and size, and true colors of designs.
Stitch Creator Feature – This is a very advanced feature. Using the stylus, create totally new 9mm stitches and go crazy with creativity.
157 Designs – In total there are 157 designs that you can use – this includes 2 embroidery fonts in three different sizes and alphanumeric ones.
Option to Memorize the Designs – You can make your machine memorize certain sets of design settings/combinations and use them easily the next time you use the machine.
IDT System – This one also features a better control on fabric system known as IDT.
Since the pros are pretty self-explanatory, let us talk about the cons.
First of all, this is not made for beginners considering how complex is the machine and how unconventional are the options it offers to its users e.g. on-screen stitch design and creation.
The stylus holder is not friendly for people who use left hand.
So, what are the points one must look for while buying one of many Pfaff sewing machine models?
Here are the points.
Define the Purpose – What do you want a sewing machine for? Is it mainly for quilting, sewing or embroidery? Do know that most of the Pfaff machines are not very suitable for thick and hard fabrics. They are mainly used for embroidering.
Number of Stitches/Designs – Are you a sucker for big number of built-in designs and stitches? If that is that case, you should definitely go for a machine that at least offers 150+ designs/stitches.
Display – Do you want a display? If yes, do you want big or small? Colored or colorless? Touch or without-touch? Do you want to be able to use the display to create new designs?
Control – Are you bent on control? If yes then go for a machine that offers features like IDT, free arm and free motion sewing.
Here are the most frequently asked questions and answers to those questions.
Where are Pfaff sewing machines made?
They are made in a big facility in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
What do Pfaff Creative 1.5 reviews reveal?
My review on that machine is based on the expert opinions and real reviews of verified buyers. Those reviews say more or less the same I said. It is a good machine for embroidery, but in case you want better options within the same ambit, 3.0 is the machine you need.
Is Pfaff Expression 2.0 a good machine?
It is one of the best that Pfaff made. As a matter of fact, if you love quilting, no other Pfaff machine (at least those on this list) can compete with Expression 2.0.
Is Pfaff the best sewing machine?
We know that Germans make some of the best machines in the world. These are also German/European standard machines that are made to last for years. The advantage of Pfaff machines are certain features (stitch creation for example), that no competitors can offer.
How much is a Pfaff sewing machine worth?
This depends on which machine you pick, but average bullpark figure is from $100 to $1000.
Which is better Bernina or Pfaff?
This is more dependent on one’s preferences, personal liking and disliking. Pfaff is a heavy-duty machine made for bigger things – for example it is a 9mm machine compared with 5mm Bernina . I’d say Pfaff is better.
